Ask for leave you can no longer leave the party for a 2 day period at 0 cost. I found this to be quite unrealistic. To terminate the contract early, you must now bribe the commander. Unlike abandoning the party, this will not cause any criminal rating, relations loss and reputation loss with the faction you are serving.
Mercenary contracts should probably: Expire after a set period of time, allowing you to renew or leave without suffering relationship penalties. Not penalize you for breaking the contract early as though you swore and then broke vassalage.
To attack a trading caravan, hold down the left CTRL key and left-click the caravan. You will notice that the cursor changes from the default hand to a sword symbol. Once you click on the caravan you will not be thrown straight into battle.
